Child custody arrangements more flexible these days

Doting parents usually want the best for their children. Now, many parents believe that a child should be able to have access to quality time with both parents for healthy relationships. Modern parents in Florida are sometimes more likely to want added stability for their children. Today's child custody agreements look different than common arrangements in the past.

In the past, unfortunately, the father often only got visitation rights. The system typically defaulted to allow the mother to have sole custody. Things are a little more equal now, with more fathers and mothers sharing custody unless there is a threat to the child's safety and well-being.

Some families are even experimenting with a custody arrangement known as the bird's nest. In this setup, the child remains in a centrally located home and the parents switch in and out every few days. This method is not without its challenges, but it has the perk of allowing the child to remain stable in a familiar home during the trying transition of divorce. However, even in cases where children go back and forth between homes, studies show that these children have fewer psychological and behavioral problems because they maintain contact with both parents.

Child custody agreements are not a one-size-fits-all approach. Each family is unique, and residency situations and co-parenting methods can be tailored to what is best for the child in each case. Many individuals in Florida may someday need assistance reaching a custody agreement. Some choose to do so with the help of an experienced family law attorney.
