Divorce rates higher for military workers

High stress jobs can have an effect on marriages, studies show. For people in the military, this means higher divorce rates for a multitude of reasons. For individuals in Florida, and throughout the 50 states, their career choice may be a predictor for future divorce.

An analysis of Census data shows that the career with the highest rate of divorce by age 30 is first-line enlisted military supervisors. Military careers took the three top spots for rates of divorce by age 30. The Census data also shows that the average age for divorce is 30 and that 41 percent of first marriages end in divorce.

The unique stresses faced by military families may explain the increased numbers of divorces. Financial limitations, frequent relocation and time apart all factor into divorce, and in fact, the likelihood of divorce increases with each month the couple is apart from one another due to military deployments. Another reason that military marriages experience more breakups can be traced to post-traumatic stress disorder experienced by those who have faced active duty. Depression and other mental health symptoms can be a great strain on a marriage and can reduce the ability of two people to stay together.

No matter the reason for divorce, a person who is considering such a life change in Florida may need help. A person will need to consider their current and future financial needs, and the needs of their children. An experienced family law attorney can provide guidance to a person who is making decisions about the future of his or her marriage.
