Resolving child custody issues

When Florida parents divorce, child custody is often a major consideration. In most cases, both parents are focused on the best interests of the child and do everything they can to avoid a custody dispute. However, despite the good faith efforts of both parties, it sometimes happens that they can't agree on custody issues.

Fortunately, these parents have options for resolving this area of conflict they don't automatically involve going to court and asking a judge to decide the case. In some situations, couples may decide to work with a counselor or therapist who specializes in working with divorcing couples. It may be that the crux of the dispute has more to do with unresolved tensions and resentments in the relationship. Once these are brought to the surface during counseling, a resolution may be forthcoming.

Other options include seeking out the help of a professional mediator. Child custody mediators are trained in offering a neutral perspective to couples in dispute. In many cases, a mediator may be able to help the couple work out an agreement.

A third option is working with collaborative lawyers. In collaborative law, the lawyers agree that they will not seek litigation and instead will cooperate to resolve issues between the parties. If the case cannot be resolved, both parents will need to seek new legal counsel.

Regardless of which strategies couples use when making decisions about child custody, many parents may benefit from speaking with an experienced family law attorney. Legal counsel can review the case and offer recommendations regarding the rights of the client, as well as possible strategies for resolving disagreements in a timely and cordial manner.
