Timing of a divorce

According to researchers from the University of Washington, divorce may be a seasonal phenomenon. They analyzed divorce filings in the state of Washington from 2001 to 2015 and found that they peak in the months of March and August. That would be around the end of winter and the end of the summer holiday season. The team thinks that the timing may be related to the cultural taboo surrounding a divorce during a holiday season, and Florida couples who are having difficulties in their relationship may find the research to be of interest.

Some couples may believe that they can fix their relationship with a good Christmas holiday together or a camping trip with the kids during the summer. However, the holidays may actually represent a time of resentment and stress that reveals issues that cannot be resolved in the relationship. It can generally be concluded that the result of a holiday together can't match the expectations, which may be further reason to get a divorce.

Research further reveals that couples prefer to get divorced in August before the kids go back to school. The March spike may be explained by the fact that couples may need to get their affairs in order or get up the courage to actually end the relationship after the winter holiday season. The longer days may also play a role in encouraging couples to take action to end their relationship.

Those who are planning on getting a divorce may wish to talk to an attorney. Legal counsel may be able to help an individual with property division, spousal support or child support issues. It may also be possible to resolve child custody issues as well as determine if a prenuptial agreement is valid with the help of an attorney.
