Military divorce rate drops

Military couples in Florida and throughout the United States may be experiencing less stress than in the past. This is the theory of one RAND Corporation researcher to account for a drop in military divorces over the last several years. In 2015, it was at its lowest point in 10 years. However, at 3 percent, it was still higher than the 2.6 percent in 2001 prior to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Enlisted female sailors had the biggest drop. From 2014 to 2015, the rate went from 7.5 percent to 6.5 percent. The researcher said this might be because the military has been making an effort to improve their policies regarding family life and sexual assault.

Officer and enlisted male troops all saw drops in the divorce rate. Most female troops did as well although there was a slight increase among female Marines. In 2014, the civilian divorce rate was at about 3.2 percent, but the military uses different methodology to gather information, so it is not possible to accurately compare the two.

There are a number of special considerations in a military divorce, and people who are going through one may want to work with an attorney who has worked with other military families. For example, the timing of the divorce in terms of how many years the marriage has lasted may have bearing on what kind of benefits are available to the civilian spouse. Financial matters may be complex in a military divorce. How often one parent is deployed may affect how child custody is decided. However, some aspects of divorce are the same for military and non-military parents. For example, while it is not always possible to remain amicable during a divorce, doing so may make the transition less difficult for children.
