The effect of prolonging a divorce decision on kids

It is normal when a decision to end their marriage takes Florida couples a long time to make. Deciding to divorce is not easy for most people and may take a considerable amount of thought. When parents prolong their decision, however, it may be confusing to their children.

When parents finally decide they want to end their marriage and one of them moves out, their children may not understand what is going on if a divorce is not filed for. Some people may remain separated for months or years. During that time, children may be consumed with the idea that their parents might reconcile, leaving little time for them to enjoy normal children's activities while they worry about it.

Some people don't want to take the final step for a dissolution because of family pressure, perceived stigma or religious beliefs. While all of those are understandable reasons, people who do not have those impediments may find that going through with the divorce may be healthier for them, their spouses and their children.

When the decision is finally made, one of the most important aspects may be the child custody and visitation arrangement they will have. People should remember that their children will best be served by having a positive relationship with both parents unless there are other issues involved. In most cases, the best interests of the child will best be served by a shared parenting arrangement in which both parents work together to raise their child in a positive manner. A parent might want to have the assistance of a family law attorney in negotiating an agreement that covers these matters.
